SOUTH AUSTIN RANCH

This home, dating from the 1960’s had a constrictive kitchen layout that isolated the cook from the social living area of the house. The small galley kitchen format also greatly limited prep space as well as the installation of professional grade cooking appliances. These shortcomings were solved by completely opening the kitchen to the living area. A maple-topped island was employed to serve as an intermediary between the two zones, enabling prep and storage while also providing bar seating. This helped to integrate socializing and entertaining with the food and beverage duties of the host. The front entry, which previously opened adjacent to the kitchen, replaced a little used storage room away from the central action of the kitchen and social area.
