Scandinavian Modern Minimalism

This European family’s 1970s house lacked the nuance of the Euro homes they enjoy overseas. They began their renovation journey with an architect in Houston, but it became clear as they entered further into the design process that they needed to work with a local firm who was familiar with the local codes and regulations of the Austin community.

Additionally, they wanted to move away from the current style of their home into a more Scandinavian modern minimalism while keeping things warm and inviting, but the architect they were working with did not offer interior design services. That’s where we got involved to better achieve their vision.

When CG&S acquired the project the general architectural scope of work was set. The plan was to renovate the kitchen, expanding the space to allow for better flow, create a new pantry, bar, and covered patio while rebuilding the garage.

Additionally, a new level two was added which includes a new guest bedroom, bath, laundry, office, and flex space.

What makes the project especially unique is the transition to Scandinavian modern design. When they purchased the house, the kitchen had been flipped and lacked character and nuance. The homeowners really enjoyed the European modern feel of the home they had abroad, so they worked with CG&S interior designer Morgan Miller to bring a piece of Europe home.

They loved the look and feel of white oak cabinetry and wanted to bring more light into the dark space. They had an inspiration photo of reeded cabinets, so we worked with a local cabinet maker to create beautiful reeded cabinets in a clear coat for the main cooking wall and bar zone while using the same wood for the island, refrigerator, and storage walls.

To keep the space looking clean and minimal a Quartz top was used as the counter and the backsplash. Large format concrete tiles adorn the floor. They’re easy to clean and flow well with the existing flooring of the home.

The gem of the space is the new stair. The homeowners wanted the stair to be a standout feature, so Morgan designed the stair with a glass partition that channels directly into the cabinetry and drywall creating a seamless insert.

It’s also multi-functional with a built-in bench for reading with storage all while giving a pass-through site line to level two above. Our clients requested an area for their young daughter to be able to hangout while the parents are cooking, and this bench is now her favorite spot in the house.

The new second level was originally designed with guests in mind (however the family’s oldest kiddo has already claimed the new guest room for himself). The generous room features a cozy reading nook with built-in storage perfect for displaying his exceptional Lego collection.

Euro-design continues into the bathroom with minimal features and a striking porcelain shower tile and the laundry room adds some whimsy with a pop of color and graphic floor tile.
